Total shoulder replacement is a surgical procedure in which the damaged components of the shoulder joint (the humeral head and the glenoid) are replaced with prosthetic parts. This procedure is typically recommended for patients with severe arthritis or joint degeneration that causes chronic pain and loss of motion. Total shoulder replacement aims to reduce pain and improve shoulder function, allowing patients to return to their normal activities.
In total shoulder replacement, the surgeon removes the damaged bone and cartilage from the shoulder joint and replaces them with artificial components made of metal and plastic. The surgery is performed under general anesthesia and typically takes a few hours. Depending on the case, some patients may require a reverse shoulder replacement if they have a torn rotator cuff.
Post-surgery recovery includes wearing a sling for several weeks and gradually working on restoring range of motion through physical therapy. Most patients experience significant pain relief after the procedure and can return to normal activities within 4-6 months. However, heavy lifting and overhead activities may need to be avoided for up to a year or longer.
