Tennis Elbow Release

Tennis elbow release is a surgical procedure used to treat chronic lateral epicondylitis (tennis elbow), a condition caused by overuse of the forearm muscles, leading to pain and tenderness on the outside of the elbow. When nonsurgical treatments such as rest, physical therapy, and anti-inflammatory medications do not alleviate symptoms, surgery may be recommended. This procedure aims to release the affected tendons to reduce pain and restore normal elbow function.

What Tennis Elbow Release Entails

During the procedure, the surgeon makes an incision over the lateral epicondyle (the outer elbow) and removes the damaged portion of the tendon. In some cases, the procedure is performed arthroscopically to minimize scarring and reduce recovery time. The surgeon may also smooth rough bone surfaces or repair any associated damage to improve joint function.

Tennis Elbow Release Recovery

Recovery includes wearing a splint or bandage to protect the elbow for a few weeks. Physical therapy is necessary to restore range of motion, strength, and flexibility. Most patients can resume light activities within 4-6 weeks, while more strenuous activities may take 3-6 months for full recovery.
