Shoulder arthroscopy is a minimally invasive surgical procedure used to diagnose and treat various shoulder conditions, such as rotator cuff tears, labral tears, and arthritis. This technique allows the surgeon to examine the inside of the joint using a small camera and treat issues with minimal disruption to surrounding tissues. It is often recommended when conservative treatments such as physical therapy and medication have failed to relieve symptoms.
The surgeon makes small incisions around the shoulder to insert the arthroscope and other surgical instruments. The procedure may involve repairing tears, removing damaged tissue, or smoothing rough surfaces in the joint. Arthroscopic surgery is often performed on an outpatient basis, and patients can typically return home the same day.
Recovery involves wearing a sling for several weeks and undergoing physical therapy to restore range of motion and strength. Most patients can resume light activities within a few weeks, but full recovery may take 3-6 months, depending on the nature of the surgery.
