Reverse Shoulder Replacement

Reverse shoulder replacement is a procedure designed for patients with severe rotator cuff arthritis or irreparable rotator cuff tears. This condition can lead to pain, stiffness, and significant loss of function in the shoulder. Unlike traditional shoulder replacement, which involves replacing the ball-and-socket joint, reverse shoulder replacement involves reversing the ball and socket positions. This procedure is particularly beneficial for older patients who are not candidates for traditional surgery due to the condition of their rotator cuff.

What Reverse Shoulder Replacement Treatment Entails

In this procedure, the ball (humeral head) is replaced with a prosthetic socket, and the socket (glenoid) is replaced with a ball-shaped component. This change allows other muscles, particularly the deltoid, to compensate for the damaged rotator cuff. The surgery is performed under general anesthesia, and the procedure typically takes a few hours to complete.

Reverse Shoulder Replacement Recovery

Post-surgery recovery includes wearing a sling for several weeks to protect the joint. Rehabilitation is crucial for regaining strength and mobility, and physical therapy focuses on improving the deltoid muscle's function. Full recovery typically takes 6-12 months, with most patients experiencing significant pain relief and improved shoulder function.
