Radial Head Replacement

Radial head replacement is a surgical procedure used to treat fractures or arthritis of the radial head, which is a part of the elbow joint. The radial head can be damaged in traumatic injuries or degenerative conditions, leading to pain and instability. This procedure involves removing the damaged radial head and replacing it with a prosthetic implant. It is often recommended when the damage is severe and cannot be repaired with fixation or other methods.

What Radial Head Replacement Treatment Entails

The procedure is typically performed under general anesthesia. The surgeon removes the damaged radial head and replaces it with a metal prosthesis designed to mimic the function of the original bone. The procedure may also involve repairing surrounding ligaments or tissues to ensure proper joint function.

Radial Head Replacement Recovery

After surgery, patients will wear a splint or sling to protect the elbow. Rehabilitation is crucial for restoring strength and mobility, with most patients experiencing significant improvement within 3-6 months. Full recovery may take up to 6 months, and certain activities, such as lifting heavy objects or participating in contact sports, may need to be avoided for a year or longer.
