Elbow replacement surgery is recommended for patients with severe arthritis or fractures that result in significant pain, stiffness, and loss of function in the elbow joint. This procedure involves replacing the damaged elbow joint with an artificial prosthesis to relieve pain and restore mobility. It is typically recommended when nonsurgical treatments such as medication and physical therapy have failed to provide adequate relief.
During the procedure, the surgeon removes the damaged bone and cartilage from the elbow joint and replaces it with prosthetic components made of metal and plastic. The surgery may take several hours and is performed under general anesthesia. The type of prosthesis used depends on the patient’s age, activity level, and the extent of joint damage.
Recovery involves wearing a splint or sling for the first few weeks and participating in physical therapy to regain strength and range of motion. Most patients experience significant pain relief and improved function, with full recovery taking 3-6 months. However, heavy lifting and contact sports may need to be avoided for up to a year.
