Biceps Tenodesis

Biceps tenodesis is a surgical procedure used to treat a torn or damaged biceps tendon, typically caused by repetitive use or trauma. This procedure is often used when the biceps tendon has been detached from its attachment point on the shoulder. Rather than reattaching the tendon to the original attachment site, the surgeon reattaches it to another area of the shoulder or upper arm bone to restore function and relieve pain. It is often recommended for patients who experience chronic pain and weakness in the biceps.

What Biceps Tenodesis Treatment Entails

During biceps tenodesis, the surgeon creates small incisions and uses an arthroscope to guide the procedure. The torn tendon is cut from its original attachment and then reattached to a different site on the shoulder or upper arm bone, typically using screws or anchors. This procedure is commonly performed with minimal disruption to surrounding tissues, resulting in quicker recovery times compared to open surgeries.

Biceps Tenodesis Recovery

Recovery involves wearing a sling for a few weeks and undergoing physical therapy to restore strength and mobility. Most patients are able to return to normal activities within 4-6 months, though heavy lifting or overhead activities may need to be avoided for 6-12 months.
