Anterior Cervical Discectomy & Fusion (ACDF)

Anterior Cervical Discectomy and Fusion (ACDF) is a surgical procedure used to treat issues in the cervical spine, such as herniated discs, degenerative disc disease, or spinal stenosis. It is commonly recommended for patients experiencing severe neck pain, radiating arm pain, or neurological symptoms like numbness or weakness caused by nerve compression. The surgery involves removing the damaged disc from the cervical spine and fusing the adjacent vertebrae to stabilize the spine and prevent further issues.

What Anterior Cervical Discectomy & Fusion (ACDF) Entails

During the procedure, the surgeon makes a small incision in the front of the neck to access the cervical spine. The damaged disc is removed, and a bone graft or synthetic spacer is inserted between the vertebrae to promote fusion. In some cases, metal plates and screws are used to secure the vertebrae during the healing process. The procedure is typically performed under general anesthesia and takes a few hours to complete.

Anterior Cervical Discectomy & Fusion (ACDF) Recovery

Recovery typically involves wearing a cervical collar to immobilize the neck during the initial healing phase. Patients may need to limit activities like lifting or bending for several weeks. Physical therapy is recommended to strengthen the neck and improve range of motion. Most patients can resume light activities within 4-6 weeks, with full recovery taking 3-6 months.
