Achilles Tendon Repair

Achilles tendon repair is a surgical treatment that restores a torn or severely damaged Achilles tendon, the strong band of tissue connecting the calf muscles to the heel bone. It is most often performed for complete ruptures that occur during sports or sudden jumping and pushing movements, or for chronic tears that have not improved with conservative care. The goal is to reattach and reinforce the tendon so the ankle can push off the ground normally for walking and running. This procedure targets soft tissues and may also address nearby structures if there is associated damage. Your surgeon may recommend repair when there is a complete rupture, a large gap between tendon ends, or persistent weakness and pain that limit daily activities.

What Achilles Tendon Repair Entails

The procedure is typically done through a small incision or several tiny incisions near the back of the ankle. The surgeon locates the torn tendon ends and stitches them together with strong suture techniques, sometimes using anchors or reinforcing grafts if the tissue is weak or the gap is large. Minimally invasive approaches can reduce disruption to surrounding tissue and may lower the risk of wound problems, while still restoring tendon continuity and strength. In chronic or complex tears, a transfer of a nearby tendon may be added to improve stability and push-off power.

Achilles Tendon Repair Recovery

Recovery usually includes a period of immobilization in a splint or boot with the foot slightly pointed down, followed by gradual weight bearing and a structured physical therapy program to restore motion, balance, and calf strength. Many patients return to regular daily activities within 8 to 12 weeks, with continued gains in strength over several months. Full recovery for running and jumping can take 4 to 6 months, and return to high-intensity sports may take 6 to 12 months depending on your age, tear size, conditioning, and adherence to rehab. Your care team will guide activity progression and help reduce risks of stiffness or re-injury.
