Distal Humerus Fracture

OrthoNJ Information
Orthopaedic Conditions

A distal humerus fracture is a break in the lower end of the humerus, the bone of the upper arm, near the elbow. These fractures are typically caused by trauma, such as a fall or direct blow to the arm. The break can involve a clean break of the bone or a more complex fracture where the bone shatters into multiple pieces. Symptoms of a distal humerus fracture include severe pain, swelling, bruising, and difficulty moving the elbow. Recovery may involve casting, and in some cases, surgery may be required to realign and stabilize the bone.

Symptoms of a Distal Humerus Fracture

  1. Severe Pain:
    • Intense pain in the upper arm, particularly when trying to move the elbow. The pain may be sharp or throbbing.
  2. Swelling and Bruising:
    • Noticeable swelling and bruising around the elbow or upper arm. The swelling may increase in the hours following the injury.
  3. Deformity:
    • Visible misalignment or deformity at the site of the fracture, particularly when the bone has been displaced.
  4. Limited Range of Motion:
    • Difficulty bending, straightening, or rotating the arm, especially due to pain or swelling.
  5. Weakness:
    • Weakness in the arm, making it difficult to perform tasks like lifting or gripping.

Distal humerus fractures cause severe pain, swelling, and deformity. Immediate medical attention is necessary to realign the bones and prevent long-term impairment of arm function.

What Causes a Distal Humerus Fracture:

  • Trauma or Impact: A direct blow, fall, or collision can cause a distal humerus fracture, particularly in high-impact sports.
  • Osteoporosis: In older individuals, weakened bones due to osteoporosis are more prone to fractures, even from minor falls.
  • High-Risk Activities: Activities such as contact sports, skiing, or high falls can increase the likelihood of a distal humerus fracture.

How to Prevent a Distal Humerus Fracture:

  • Bone Health: Maintaining strong bones through weight-bearing exercises, calcium, and vitamin D can help prevent fractures.
  • Fall Prevention: Taking steps to prevent falls, such as removing hazards from the home, can reduce the risk of fractures.
  • Protective Gear: Using elbow pads or other protective equipment during high-risk activities can help cushion impacts and prevent fractures.

When to Seek Orthopedic Care for a Distal Humerus Fracture:

  • Severe Pain and Swelling: If there is immediate pain, swelling, or deformity after an injury, seek medical attention right away.
  • Inability to Move the Elbow: Difficulty moving the arm or elbow is a clear sign of a possible fracture.
  • Visible Deformity: If the elbow appears misshapen or if there is a bump in the arm, immediate orthopedic care is needed.

An orthopedic surgeon, particularly one who specializes in upper extremity fractures, is necessary to assess the severity of the fracture and recommend a treatment plan. Surgery may be required in more complex fractures.
