Orthopaedic Conditions

Arthritis refers to the inflammation of joints, and when it affects the spine, it can cause pain, stiffness, and loss of mobility. There are different types of arthritis, including osteoarthritis (degenerative) and rheumatoid arthritis (autoimmune). In the spine, arthritis can affect the facet joints, leading to decreased flexibility and pain, particularly during movement. Over time, arthritis can lead to the development of bone spurs and narrowing of the spinal canal, which may further limit mobility. While it’s a common condition in older adults, arthritis can also affect younger individuals who have experienced spinal injuries or who are genetically predisposed.

Symptoms of Arthritis:

  • Joint pain or stiffness:
    • Chronic pain or stiffness in the spine or neck that doesn’t improve with rest.
  • Limited range of motion:
    • Difficulty bending, twisting, or turning the back or neck.
  • Swelling or warmth:
    • Inflammation or warmth in the spinal joints, often accompanied by tenderness.
  • Grinding or popping sensations:
    • Audible or felt grinding in the spine due to cartilage deterioration.

Arthritis in the spine can lead to pain, stiffness, and reduced mobility. Early diagnosis and treatment can slow progression and improve daily function.

What Causes Arthritis:

  • Age: The wear and tear on joints as we age can lead to the breakdown of cartilage, resulting in arthritis.
  • Injury: Past spinal injuries, such as fractures or sprains, can increase the risk of developing arthritis in the affected joints.
  • Genetic Factors: Some people inherit a predisposition to arthritis, making them more susceptible to developing the condition earlier in life.

How to Prevent Arthritis:

  • Maintaining a Healthy Weight: Excess weight places added stress on the joints, increasing the risk of arthritis.
  • Regular Exercise: Strengthening the muscles surrounding the spine helps reduce the strain on the joints, lowering the risk of arthritis.
  • Joint Protection: Avoiding repetitive strain or heavy lifting can help preserve the integrity of the spine and joints.

When to Seek Orthopedic Care for Arthritis:

  • Persistent Pain: Chronic pain in the neck or back that doesn’t improve with rest may indicate arthritis.
  • Stiffness: If you notice limited range of motion, particularly in the morning or after sitting for long periods, it may be a sign of arthritis.
  • Swelling and Inflammation: Swelling around the joints or noticeable inflammation can be signs that arthritis is present.

An orthopedic surgeon or rheumatologist specializing in spinal conditions can provide an accurate diagnosis and recommend treatment options, from physical therapy to joint injections or surgery.
