Cubital Tunnel Release

Cubital tunnel release is a surgical procedure that relieves pressure on the ulnar nerve as it passes along the inner side of the elbow. It is performed to treat cubital tunnel syndrome, which can cause numbness and tingling in the ring and small fingers and hand, along with weakness; aching at the elbow or forearm may also occur. The surgery targets soft tissues that tighten around the nerve, such as the roof of the cubital tunnel, and may address nearby structures that contribute to compression. Your surgeon may recommend it when symptoms persist despite rest, activity changes, bracing, or therapy, or when there is progressive weakness. At OrthoNJ, we focus on helping you reduce pain and protect nerve function so you can return to daily use of your arm.

What Cubital Tunnel Release Entails

During the procedure, the surgeon makes a small incision at the elbow and releases the tight tissue that forms the cubital tunnel roof to create more space for the ulnar nerve. In some cases, the nerve is gently freed from surrounding bands of tissue to glide without irritation. Minimally invasive techniques may be used to limit soft tissue disruption, which can reduce soreness and help you recover sooner.

Cubital Tunnel Release Recovery

After surgery, you will have a soft dressing and begin gentle elbow and hand motion soon after, followed by a therapy program to restore flexibility and strength. Many people notice numbness and tingling improve over weeks, with hand strength returning more gradually over several months. Recovery can take longer if you had severe or long-standing nerve compression, medical conditions that affect healing, or a job with heavy or repetitive elbow use.
