Carpal Tunnel Release

Carpal tunnel release is a surgery that eases pressure on the median nerve in your wrist to treat carpal tunnel syndrome. This condition can cause numbness, tingling, pain, and hand weakness that affect daily tasks. The procedure focuses on the transverse carpal ligament, a band of tissue forming the roof of the carpal tunnel around the wrist bones and flexor tendons. By creating more room in this space, the aim is to reduce nerve irritation and improve comfort and function. At OrthoNJ, we may recommend surgery when symptoms persist despite splinting or other nonoperative care, or when testing shows ongoing nerve compression.

What Carpal Tunnel Release Entails

Your surgeon releases, or carefully divides, the tight transverse carpal ligament through a small open incision or an endoscopic technique using a tiny camera and specialized instruments. This creates more space within the tunnel and takes pressure off the median nerve. Smaller incisions and endoscopic methods can limit disruption to nearby soft tissues and may lessen soreness and speed early hand use.

Carpal Tunnel Release Recovery

After surgery, you can expect a light dressing and early finger movement to help reduce stiffness. Many people resume routine activities in a few weeks, with grip strength and fine motor control improving over the following weeks to months. Hand therapy or guided exercises may be recommended to restore motion and strength, especially for physically demanding jobs. Recovery can take longer if symptoms were severe or long-standing, or if you have health factors that affect healing.
