Biceps tendon repair is a procedure designed to fix a torn or ruptured biceps tendon, which can occur due to overuse, trauma, or degeneration. The biceps tendon is responsible for connecting the biceps muscle to the shoulder and elbow. This procedure is often performed when nonsurgical treatments, such as rest or physical therapy, are ineffective in relieving pain or restoring function.
During the procedure, the surgeon may reattach the tendon to the bone using sutures or anchors. In cases of complete tendon rupture, the tendon may be re-routed and reattached to another part of the shoulder or upper arm. The surgery is typically done arthroscopically, using small incisions to reduce trauma to the surrounding tissues.
Recovery involves wearing a sling for a few weeks to protect the shoulder and gradual physical therapy to regain strength and flexibility. Most patients experience full recovery within 4-6 months, though more strenuous activities may need to be avoided for up to a year.
