Shoulder Tendonitis

OrthoNJ Information
Orthopaedic Conditions

Shoulder tendonitis occurs when the tendons in the shoulder, typically the rotator cuff tendons, become inflamed due to overuse or injury. This condition can cause pain and swelling, often affecting the ability to move the shoulder freely. It’s common in athletes and workers who repeatedly perform overhead movements. If left untreated, tendonitis can lead to tendon degeneration and permanent damage. Tendonitis can also lead to conditions like impingement syndrome, where tendons are compressed, worsening the symptoms.

Symptoms of Shoulder Tendonitis

  1. Pain:
    • Dull or sharp pain around the shoulder, which worsens with movement or pressure on the affected tendon.
  2. Swelling:
    • Mild to moderate swelling around the affected tendon, particularly in the rotator cuff or biceps tendon.
  3. Stiffness:
    • Difficulty moving the shoulder, particularly in the morning or after prolonged inactivity.
  4. Tenderness:
    • Sensitivity around the tendon site, which may worsen with movement or activity.
  5. Weakness:
    • Reduced strength, especially when performing overhead motions or lifting.
  6. Limited Range of Motion:
    • Difficulty raising or rotating the arm, especially with overhead movements.

Shoulder tendonitis causes pain, swelling, and limited movement, especially with repetitive activities. Rest, anti-inflammatory medications, and physical therapy are essential for managing symptoms.

What Causes Shoulder Tendonitis:

  • Overuse: Repeated overhead movements or activities that stress the shoulder tendons, such as throwing, lifting, or swimming, can lead to tendonitis.
  • Age-Related Changes: As tendons age, they become less flexible and more prone to inflammation from repetitive use.
  • Injury: Sudden trauma or a fall can cause tendon irritation or inflammation, leading to tendonitis.

How to Prevent Shoulder Tendonitis:

  • Rest and Recovery: Avoiding repetitive stress and giving the shoulder adequate time to rest can prevent tendonitis from developing.
  • Stretching and Strengthening: Keeping the shoulder muscles flexible and strong helps prevent tendon irritation and injury.
  • Proper Technique: Using correct form during physical activities reduces stress on the shoulder tendons, decreasing the risk of inflammation.

When to Seek Orthopedic Care for Shoulder Tendonitis:

  • Persistent Pain: If shoulder pain persists or worsens despite rest and ice, medical evaluation is necessary.
  • Weakness and Limited Range of Motion: Difficulty lifting the arm or performing everyday tasks is a sign of significant tendon damage.
  • Swelling and Tenderness: Inflammation that doesn’t subside may require professional assessment to rule out other conditions.

An orthopedic specialist, particularly one experienced with tendon injuries, can evaluate the shoulder, perform imaging tests, and recommend treatments like physical therapy, injections, or surgery if necessary.
