Radial Head Fractures

OrthoNJ Information
Orthopaedic Conditions

A radial head fracture occurs when the top part of the radius, one of the bones in the forearm, breaks at the elbow. These fractures are often caused by falls onto an outstretched arm or a direct blow to the elbow. Radial head fractures can range from small cracks to more severe fractures that require surgical intervention. Symptoms include pain, swelling, and difficulty moving the arm. If not treated properly, it can lead to long-term joint problems, such as limited mobility or arthritis.

Symptoms of

  1. Pain:
    • Sharp or aching pain in the outer side of the elbow, especially when trying to rotate or extend the arm.
  2. Swelling and Bruising:
    • Noticeable swelling and bruising around the elbow joint, which can spread to the forearm.
  3. Limited Range of Motion:
    • Difficulty rotating the arm or straightening the elbow fully, particularly with overhead motions.
  4. Weakness:
    • Weakness when trying to grip or lift objects.
  5. Tenderness:
    • Sensitivity around the radial head, especially when pressure is applied.

Radial head fractures lead to pain, limited movement, and weakness. Treatment often includes immobilization or surgery, depending on the severity of the fracture.

What Causes :

  • Trauma or Fall: Falling onto an outstretched hand or direct impact to the elbow can cause the radial head to fracture.
  • Contact Sports: Activities like football or martial arts, which involve high-impact falls or direct blows, increase the likelihood of radial head fractures.
  • Osteoporosis: In older adults, weakened bones make the radial head more susceptible to fractures from even minor falls.

How to Prevent :

  • Fall Prevention: Taking precautions to avoid falls, such as wearing elbow pads or avoiding slippery surfaces, can help prevent fractures.
  • Strengthening Exercises: Building strength in the muscles around the elbow joint helps protect the bones from impact and stress.
  • Proper Technique: Using proper techniques during physical activities can minimize the risk of injury to the forearm and elbow.

When to Seek Orthopedic Care for :

  • Severe Pain and Swelling: If the elbow becomes extremely painful and swollen after a fall or blow, it may indicate a radial head fracture.
  • Inability to Bend the Elbow: Difficulty moving or bending the elbow is a clear sign of a possible fracture that requires medical attention.
  • Deformity or Limited Mobility: If the elbow appears misshapen or movement is restricted, it’s crucial to seek orthopedic care.

An orthopedic surgeon with expertise in elbow fractures is essential for assessing and treating radial head fractures. They will determine the need for surgery or conservative treatment based on the severity of the fracture.
