Glenohumeral Arthritis

OrthoNJ Information
Orthopaedic Conditions

Glenohumeral arthritis refers to the degenerative breakdown of the cartilage in the shoulder joint, leading to pain, stiffness, and limited mobility. This condition can occur due to aging, wear and tear, or previous injuries that cause the cartilage to degrade over time. As the cartilage wears away, the bones in the joint may begin to rub together, causing inflammation and pain. Over time, this can significantly limit shoulder function, affecting basic movements like reaching, lifting, or even sleeping on the affected side. If untreated, glenohumeral arthritis can lead to permanent joint damage.

Symptoms of Glenohumeral Arthritis

  1. Pain:
    • Persistent, aching pain in the shoulder, which worsens with movement, especially during overhead or rotational motions.
    • The pain can become sharp or intense during activity or at night.
  2. Stiffness:
    • Difficulty moving the shoulder, particularly when reaching, lifting, or rotating the arm.
    • The stiffness may feel like the joint is "locked" or difficult to move.
  3. Swelling:
    • Noticeable swelling around the shoulder joint, which may be accompanied by warmth or redness.
    • Swelling can increase with activity or inflammation.
  4. Weakness:
    • Reduced strength in the shoulder, making it difficult to lift or carry objects, especially with overhead or extended arm movements.
  5. Grinding or Crepitus:
    • A grinding or popping sensation during shoulder movement, indicating cartilage breakdown or joint wear.
    • This may be especially noticeable when moving the arm in certain directions.
  6. Decreased Range of Motion:
    • Limited mobility in the shoulder, particularly with activities such as reaching behind the back or raising the arm overhead.
  7. Decreased Functionality:
    • Difficulty with everyday activities that require shoulder movement, such as dressing, brushing hair, or carrying groceries.

Glenohumeral arthritis causes pain, stiffness, weakness, and decreased mobility in the shoulder. It can lead to joint degeneration and functional limitations. Early intervention through physical therapy, medications, or in some cases, surgery, can help manage symptoms.

What Causes Glenohumeral Arthritis:

  • Age: As we age, the cartilage in the shoulder joint naturally wears down, leading to arthritis.
  • Previous Injuries: Past shoulder dislocations, fractures, or other injuries can damage the cartilage and lead to arthritis over time.
  • Genetics: Some people may be genetically predisposed to developing arthritis in the shoulder joint.

How to Prevent Glenohumeral Arthritis:

  • Maintaining Healthy Weight: Carrying excess weight puts extra stress on the shoulder joint, speeding up cartilage wear.
  • Avoiding Repetitive Trauma: Limiting repetitive overhead or heavy lifting activities can reduce the strain on the shoulder joint.
  • Strengthening Muscles Around the Shoulder: Keeping the muscles around the shoulder joint strong helps support and protect the cartilage.

When to Seek Orthopedic Care for Glenohumeral Arthritis:

  • Persistent Shoulder Pain: If pain persists, particularly during motion or at night, it may indicate arthritis.
  • Limited Range of Motion: Difficulty in moving the shoulder, such as reaching overhead or behind your back, is a common symptom.
  • Crepitus or Grinding: A grinding or popping sensation when moving the shoulder may signal cartilage breakdown and the need for medical intervention.

An orthopedic surgeon specializing in shoulder arthritis is essential for diagnosis and treatment. Early intervention can help manage symptoms and potentially delay the need for more invasive treatments like joint replacement.
