Subtalar & Triple Arthrodesis

Subtalar and triple arthrodesis are surgical procedures that fuse certain joints in the hindfoot to relieve pain and improve stability. These joints include the subtalar joint alone, or the subtalar, talonavicular, and calcaneocuboid joints together, which are made up of bones, cartilage, and surrounding ligaments. The operations are considered when arthritis, severe deformity, or instability has not improved with bracing, orthotics, activity changes, or medications. By eliminating painful motion and restoring alignment, they assist in standing and walking with greater comfort. At OrthoNJ, we recommend fusion only after careful evaluation and discussion of nonsurgical options.

What Subtalar & Triple Arthrodesis Entails

During surgery, the surgeon removes the remaining cartilage from the affected joint surfaces, positions the bones in proper alignment, and holds them together with screws or other fixation so the bones can grow together into one solid unit. Imaging guidance is used to confirm alignment and hardware position, and small bone grafts may be added if needed to support healing. Fusing the joint stops the painful motion and aims to improve foot alignment for better function.

Subtalar & Triple Arthrodesis Recovery

After surgery, the foot and ankle are protected in a splint or cast, and you will avoid putting weight on the leg for a period set by your surgeon. As healing progresses, you transition to a boot and begin gradual weight bearing and physical therapy to restore motion in nearby joints, strength, and balance. Full recovery typically takes several months, and complete recovery often takes 6–12 months; factors like bone healing, smoking, diabetes, and adherence to restrictions can extend the timeline.
