Superior Capsular Reconstruction

Superior capsular reconstruction is a surgical procedure used to treat irreparable rotator cuff tears, particularly in older patients or those with chronic shoulder instability. The procedure involves using a graft to replace the damaged or torn part of the shoulder capsule, improving stability and function. This technique is often recommended when the rotator cuff cannot be repaired due to significant tissue loss or degeneration.

What Superior Capsular Reconstruction Treatment Entails

The surgery is performed through small incisions, using an arthroscope for visualization. A tissue graft, often taken from the patient’s own body or a donor source, is used to reconstruct the superior portion of the shoulder capsule. This new tissue helps stabilize the shoulder and can restore normal motion and strength.

Superior Capsular Reconstruction Recovery

Recovery involves wearing a sling to protect the shoulder and undergoing physical therapy for rehabilitation. Full recovery can take 4-6 months, with rehabilitation focusing on restoring strength, flexibility, and stability to the joint. Some patients may require additional rehabilitation after the initial recovery period.
